Primrose Lane when it floods
This is Primrose Lane when it floods, drains blocked so the water flows downhill filling the ditches and water collects at the bottom near Hails Meadow, this eventually ends up in Mudford where it’s mixed with raw sewage with compliments from Wessex Water, end result is a potent cocktail of nasty effluent, running down to West Mudford bridge! And Primrose Lane is due to get 750 houses built on this site, what an earth are they thinking!!
River Yeo is rising – Stay safe

Yeovil Marsh road, Ashington/Limington and of course West Mudford are all pretty much impassable yet again, the river Yeo is rising too. Best advise is to stay at home and stay safe. Don’t forget DONT drive through floodwater, if there is a road flooded sign, and you drive through it and get stuck your insurance will be invalid
Droveway Lane – beware more floods
Here we go again! This video was captured this morning by one of our flood group, after only a short 2 hours of rain yet again the water starts flowing down Droveway Lane and into West Mudford Lane, it won’t be long before the Church gets flooded for the second time in a week, please be careful and don’t drive through if the ‘Flood’ signs are out, we have lost two cars already last week.
Emergency services called yet again.
Why do people drive into floodwater when there are clear signs to say ‘Flood’, yet another victim of the quickly rising waters at Mudford. ** Update ** two vehicle were lost in this event.
Dirty Drains a plenty

Keep it clean!
This just shows the importance of keeping the kerbside drains clean, after a short but hard downpour this morning, Winters Lane’s drains are obviously not doing their job. As you can tell from the image the drains are filling up with mud and leaves from surrounding fields, so the water moves onto the next drain and so forth culminating in a much larger flow of water down hill until it collects somewhere. Please help us by adopting a drain and keeping it free from mud and leaves. it all helps.

Moving Forward – What Can Be Done?

Moving forward what can be done, While the community’s efforts are commendable, there is a need for greater support from local authorities and utility providers to prevent future incidents. Proposed solutions include:
- Infrastructure Upgrades: Urgent investment is required in modern flood prevention infrastructure, such as improved drainage systems, flood barriers, and enhanced pumping station capacity.
- River Maintenance: Regular maintenance and dredging of the River Yeo can help improve water flow and reduce the risk of river overflow.
Sewage contamination

Sewage contamination is one of the most significant hazards during flooding in Mudford. One of the group’s major concerns is the overflow of untreated sewage from the local pumping station operated by Wessex Water. When floodwaters rise, the pumping station at Mudford struggles to handle the volume, leading to sewage overflows that contaminate floodwaters. This creates severe health risks, including exposure to harmful bacteria and pollutants.
Contaminated floodwaters pose risks to anyone coming into contact with them, especially children and pets. In addition, they can damage agricultural land, lead to long-term soil contamination, and negatively impact the local environment, including the nearby River Yeo and beyond.
The Flooding Crisis in Mudford
The Flooding Crisis in Mudford.
Mudford lies in a low-lying area, making it particularly vulnerable to flooding during heavy rainfall. The combination of inadequate drainage infrastructure and the overflowing River Yeo has resulted in repeated incidents of water logging, property damage, and disruption to daily life. Many families have faced the ordeal of cleaning up after floods, dealing with water damage to homes, and the associated financial and emotional burden.
Beyond physical damage, the contamination of floodwaters by sewage has become a critical concern.
Tackling flooding in Mudford

A Community’s Fight Against Rising Waters and Sewage Contamination
Tackling flooding in Mudford, a picturesque village in Somerset, has long battled with flooding, a problem that has only worsened in recent years due to climate change and increased rainfall. Floods in aren’t just about excess water; they bring with them a range of environmental and public health challenges that affect residents and wildlife alike. In response to this recurring issue, local residents have joined forces to create The Three Villages Flood Group, a community initiative aimed at raising awareness, driving action, and ensuring the safety of Mudford and its neighbouring villages.
