Welcome to the 3 Villages Flood Group
We have seen increased flooding throughout the Parish of Mudford and surrounding areas – Main St has been flooded and West Mudford Road impassable at times.
West Mudford has been particularly affected with residents “cut off” on several occasions. West Mudford Rd has seen cars stuck in the flood waters in potentially life threatening situations.
Emergency services have been called out to rescue people.. On the Thursday before the Easter weekend 2024 five fire engines were involved in an incident in West Mudford Road, with great effort and skill rescued people stuck in vehicles.
Given Climate Change and the fact that Somerset County Council is facing a major budget deficit it seems that more and more communities are seeking local solutions via their Parish Councils.
At a Parish Council meeting in 2024 flooding was discussed at length and a suggestion made that a joint action group was formed between the Parish Council and local residents. This group has now been formed and is called ‘The 3 Villages Flood Group’ the 3 Villages are Mudford, Ashington & Chilton Cantelo.
The overall aim of the group is to raise awareness of risk and where possible undertake various actions to lessen flooding threat to individuals, homes, properties and businesses.

If you have some spare time, why not come along and help out, there is always a need for people to do things such as Flood warden, adopt a drain, telephone helpline, and much more.
Training for our flood wardens is a online course giving you the do’s & dont’s in the event of flooding.
We will also supply the necessary equipment needed, such as a radio, boots and high vis jackets.
All our flood wardens will be of course insured.
As the councils and highway authorities have very little funding to clear and maintain drains, we are asking people to help out. Is there a drain that needs clearing or dredging, if it’s just a case of clearing leaves and sticks, perhaps you could do that yourself. If drains are needing a deeper clean you can contact us and we will endeavour to get them cleaned.
it’s so important that the drains are kept clear of debris as this is a major contributing factor to flooding. If you can help out please let us know.
Most of us are aware of the vulnerable in our area or street, they are more at risk from flooding than most. If you know someone that needs help please contact them and find out if they would appreciate a phone call or visit when the weather is bad. They will appreciate your help more than you know.
We are to designate Mudford Village Hall as a ‘Safe Space’ where the vulnerable can get reassurance, warmth and a hot drink.
A landline will also be available.

As you may or may not be aware, every time flooding occurs sewerage get pumped into the rivers, this map shows where and when this happens and with what frequency, you would be surprised how much effluent gets pumped into our rivers on a regular basis, making flooding even more hazardous.
